First Video Games I Played

On Facebook many friends were doing a “30 days of music” thing which I blogged about a little while back and today I saw a friend join in with a gaming version. I went to post a link to Day 01 – First Video Game You Played when I got lost in a sea of youtube videos.

My Dad had an Apricot computer when I was little for his work and it had a handful of games that I used to love playing on a weekend. They were on a floppy disk back when they were actually floppy. I have no doubt that it led on to my enjoyment of my Atari, SNES, Playstations etc etc. The three main games were a golf one, 3-Demon and Alley Cat.

3-Demon was one of the first games to pioneer the first-person view and is pretty much a play on Pac-Man but way scarier. It was very much the Dead Space of its day and I recall my heart drumming away and jumping out of my skin when suddenly confronted with a ghost. Yeah, sure, the video doesn’t make it seem petrifying nowdays but cut me some slack, this was new technology to me and I was only about six or so.

Alley Cat was really difficult as I have awful reflexes. You play a cat trying to jump madly round a screen and die lots. Or at least that’s what happened to me!

Unless I’d played on an arcade cabinet before the Apricot came into my life, my memory is too hazy to remember, these were the first video games I got to suck at :)

Fab, you were lucky to have access to something like that. My first game was a clone of the old Colossal Cave text adventure on a Commodore PET :)
